1990 – 1999 – Following a period in the 1980s where Ferrari’s focus remained largely on Formula 1, the brand’s commitment to developing dedicated track cars had noticeably diminished. While road car innovation continued, the era was marked by fewer racing customer programs and a limited presence in sports car competition.
However, as the 1990s approached, a strategic shift began to take place. Ferrari made a conscious effort to reassert its presence beyond F1 by rekindling its passion for track-focused engineering. This renewed ambition led to a flurry of development activity at the legendary Ferrari “Skunk Works”—the Special Projects division in Maranello known for crafting low-volume, high-performance machines.
Over the course of the 1990s, 22 distinct models were created, with five specifically engineered for the racetrack. These included homologation specials, one-off race cars, and limited production models that blurred the line between road and competition use.
The decade reached its zenith with the unveiling of the Ferrari F50 in 1995—a true celebration of Ferrari’s motorsport heritage. Designed to bring the spirit of Formula 1 to the road, the F50 featured a naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V12 derived directly from Ferrari’s 1990 F1 engine. With just 349 examples produced, it embodied the fusion of cutting-edge technology and raw racing emotion that defined Ferrari’s renewed vision.
This era marked a turning point—laying the groundwork for Ferrari’s modern track-day programs, customer racing initiatives, and limited-series hyper cars that continue to honour the brand’s rich competition legacy.
