Ferrari’s long-standing tradition of producing competitive GT cars has always thrived on the passion and commitment of privateer drivers. To channel this enthusiasm into a more focused and accessible format, Ferrari launched the Ferrari Challenge—a one-make racing series that allowed owners to experience true competition behind the wheel of factory-prepared machines.
The concept began in 1993 with the 348 Challenge, followed by the F355 Challenge in 1995, which featured a factory-developed kit to convert road cars into race-ready machines. By the 2000 season, the series entered a new era with the debut of the 360 Modena Challenge—a purpose-built track car based on the 360 Modena, Ferrari’s then-newest mid-engined V8.
Although it retained the standard 3.6-litre V8 engine producing 400 bhp at 8,500 rpm, the 360 Challenge underwent extensive revisions to optimize it for track use. These included stripped-down interior components, track-tuned suspension, racing slicks, competition brakes, a roll cage, and a FIA-compliant fire suppression system. Weight was significantly reduced, improving both agility and responsiveness, while key aerodynamic enhancements improved high-speed stability.
Unlike its predecessors, the 360 Challenge marked a turning point in the series by being built directly by the factory as a race car from new, rather than converted from road cars. This shift highlighted Ferrari’s growing commitment to customer racing, and the 360 Challenge went on to form the backbone of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series through the early 2000s.
Today, the Ferrari 360 Challenge remains a popular entry point into vintage Ferrari racing and track days—offering drivers an authentic motorsport experience with unmistakable Ferrari performance and character.
