Ferrari 348 Gt Competizione

The Ferrari 348 GT Competizione, introduced in 1993, was a limited-production, lightweight version of the 348 GTB, built specifically to homologate the model for competition in the FIA GT Championship and Ferrari’s growing track-focused customer programs.

Unlike the standard 348, the Competizione was extensively reworked for racing. Ferrari, with assistance from Michelotto, stripped away all comfort-oriented equipment—no air conditioning, carpeting, or sound insulation remained. The cabin was fitted with carbon-Kevlar racing seats, a fire suppression system, and a full roll cage, while much of the bodywork, including doors and bumpers, was also made from carbon-Kevlar to drastically reduce weight. The result was a car weighing approximately 190 kg (418 lbs) less than the standard GTB.

Chassis and suspension upgrades were equally significant. The standard rubber bushings were replaced with rigid rose-joints, while track-ready dampers and springs were installed for better response and adjustability. The braking system was upgraded with cross-drilled, ventilated discs and racing calipers derived from the F40, ensuring durability under high-performance driving.

Wheel and tyre dimensions were also increased for competition use. The stock 17-inch wheels were replaced by 18-inch Speedline wheels, wearing Pirelli racing slicks—239/635/18 at the front and 265/645/18 at the rear—for improved grip and handling balance.

Unlike many race homologations, the engine remained largely unchanged, retaining the standard 3.4-litre, 32-valve V8 that produced around 320 hp. However, a free-flow exhaust system and recalibrated engine management improved throttle response and power delivery, making the most of the car’s lighter weight and sharpened dynamics.

Ferrari built just 50 examples of the 348 GT Competizione, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after 348 variants. While it was never a factory-supported race car in the same way as the F40 LM or 333 SP, it served as a crucial stepping stone in Ferrari’s commitment to track-focused models and helped lay the groundwork for future racing customer programs, such as the F355 Challenge and 360 Modena GT.
