Essex wire GT40,
The Essex Wire race team was a motorsport team that participated in various racing disciplines, primarily in the United States, during the 1960s and 1970s. The team was associated with Essex Wire Corporation, an American wire and cable manufacturer.
Essex Wire competed in different racing series, including sports car racing and endurance events. One of the notable collaborations of the Essex Wire team was with Ford and Shelby American. They participated in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race in the late 1960s, campaigning the legendary Ford GT40 race cars.
In 1967, the Essex Wire team entered two Ford GT40 Mk IVs at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The team achieved a remarkable result, with the car driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt securing overall victory. This triumph marked the first and only all-American victory at Le Mans, solidifying the Essex Wire team’s place in motorsport history.
The Essex Wire race team’s success at Le Mans showcased their skill, dedication, and ability to compete at the highest level of endurance racing. While their involvement in motorsport may not have been as extensive or long-lasting as some other teams, their significant achievement at Le Mans remains a memorable milestone in American motorsport history.

Here at SBR Engineering we were honoured to be given the task of recommissioning this totally original GT40.
This car (Chassis GT40 P/1001) is a "production" GT40, and was the New York motor show car in 1966. Chassis GT40 P/1000 was the first car made, but was destroyed in testing, so Chassis P/1001 was flown from New York to Ford Advanced Vehicles in Europe, and was prepared to race in the Le Mans 24Hr that year.
