The Brabham BT62 stands as a testament to engineering excellence, without the budgets of the big manufactures in the motor industry. Paying homage to the legendary Brabham name while setting new benchmarks in modern track cars and motorsport. Designed and built by Brabham Automotive, the BT62 was a track-focused hypercar combining innovative design, cutting-edge technology, and a relentless pursuit of performance. It’s a vehicle crafted not only to dominate the racetrack but to deliver an unparalleled driving experience
The BT62’s Performance
The BT62 boasts a ultra lightweight carbon-fibre body and lightweight tubular chassis, resulting in a car that weighs just 972 kilograms. Under the bonnet, it’s powered by a 5.4-litre naturally aspirated Ford derived V8 engine, tuned by Brabham delivering a staggering 700 horsepower and 667 Nm of torque. This power-to-weight ratio ensures blistering acceleration and razor-sharp handling, characteristics essential for competing at the highest levels of track driving.
Every aspect of the BT62 has been meticulously engineered for track performance. From the advanced aerodynamics, which generate over 1,200 kilograms of downforce, to the precision suspension setup, the BT62 offers unparalleled stability and cornering capability. It’s a car that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in a low production volume track car.

SB Race Engineering: Elevating the BT62 to New Heights
The story of the Brabham BT62’s racing prowess wouldn’t be complete without mentioning SB Race Engineering. As motorsport specialist we played a pivotal role in preparing the first customer BT62 for competitive racing. Known for our expertise in high-performance vehicles and race engineering, the BT62 owned by long time SBR Client Paul Bailey, arrived with us late 2020. The work began for the 2021 season!
Our involvement began with comprehensive testing and calibration to optimise the car’s performance as a race car. We fine tuned the BT62’s suspension, brakes, engine management and traction control systems to suit the specific requirements of our customer and the intended racing environment.
There were lots of changes needed, as the BT62 wasn’t built to any specific homologation standard, and was really a track day car. Our teams attention to detail inevitably saw a complete strip and rebuild of the car to make it suitable for racing.
In addition to the technical enhancements, we provided invaluable support during the car’s initial outings. From trackside assistance to data analysis, the team worked tirelessly to ensure the BT62’s debuts were nothing short of spectacular! This collaboration between Brabham Automotive, David Brabham and SB Race Engineering was key in transforming the BT62 into a race-winning machine.
Race Wining Performance… but what happened?
After considerable testing and modification we went on to prepare and supported the car in the 2021 and 2022 race season. The car was entered in British GT Cup Championship. The drivers, Paul Bailey and Ross Wylie, racked up some impressive race wins, class wins and fastest laps in every race! But unfortunately we were plagued with engine reliability problems. When the BT62 was on form it was untouchable!
We retired the car and SBRs involvement with Brabham project in May 2022, we assisted with running the car in 2023 but not under the SBR banner. The continued failures saw Brabham Automotive lose the “contract” to build cars baring the Brabham name.
Still with persistent engine issues, this BT62 was withdrawn from racing, after a brief run in 2024. Until a suitable engine specification and supplier can be found then project is still on hold. Hopefully it will be back soon!
